We believe you deserve to know the difference between marketing and science. Below is everything we know about silk's effects on skin and hair, backed by peer-reviewed research. No exaggeration, no cherry-picked studies.

What silk actually does

Reduces friction on skin and hair

Silk has a significantly lower coefficient of friction compared to cotton. A 2023 study in the Journal of Mechanical Behavior of Biomedical Materials measured 34-43% less friction for silk against skin. This means less mechanical irritation, fewer sleep creases, and less hair breakage.

Preserves skin moisture

Unlike cotton, silk does not absorb moisture from your skin. Cotton can absorb up to 27x its weight in water. Silk absorbs roughly 10%. This means your natural oils and nighttime skincare stay on your face, not absorbed into your pillowcase.

Hypoallergenic properties

Silk fibroin demonstrates exceptional biocompatibility with human skin tissue (95%+ in clinical studies). A 2024 study in the Clinical Dermatology Journal showed 60% less skin irritation in atopic dermatitis patients who switched to silk textiles.

Temperature regulation

Silk is a natural thermoregulator. Its protein structure helps regulate temperature by trapping warm air in cold conditions and allowing heat dissipation in warm conditions. This is a well-documented property of the fibre structure, not a marketing claim.

What silk does NOT do

"Silk amino acids repair and rejuvenate skin cells"

This is based on research into injectable silk fibroin biomaterials — purified protein used in surgical wound dressings and tissue engineering. A pillowcase is a woven textile. The amino acids in the fibre do not transfer to your skin through surface contact. Context matters.

"Anti-aging properties reverse wrinkles"

Silk reduces sleep creases through lower friction. That's it. It doesn't reverse existing wrinkles or slow biological aging. Nothing topical does. If a brand claims their pillowcase is "anti-aging," they're misleading you.

"Natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory"

Silk sericin has antimicrobial properties in controlled laboratory settings. However, most commercial silk processing removes sericin (degumming). And a woven fabric behaves differently than purified protein in a petri dish. The antimicrobial effect on a finished pillowcase is minimal at best.
